James 1:12-18

12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

Transformation Questions:

  • Does God temp us?
  • Where does temptation come from?
  • If God is in control of everything, why does He allow us to face temptation?
  • When temptation comes, how do you gain victory over the temptation? Do you find motivation thinking about the consequences, thinking about just doing right, or is there something else that motivates you not to chase after temptation?
  • We all fight temptation every day, though our temptations vary. What are practical daily things you do to fight temptations?
  • James shows that God is not the author of sin and that God does not tempt us to sin. Further, James shows us that God is the Father of light and the giver of every good gift. What are good gifts that come from God?
  • Pastor Todd challenged us to have an invitation mindset as we live out our week. What does that mean?
  • Why should we invite them to visit us? What does our church have to offer people?
  • In reality, how many interactions do you have a week with people that are not members of our church? What are the situations and places that you see people?
  • Go around the room. How many interactions could you turn into invitations this week?
