Parables

Matthew 13:1-23

Read Matthew 13:18-23

18 “Hear then the parable of the sower. 19 “When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is the one on whom seed was sown beside the road. 20 “The one on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, this is the man who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21yet he has not firm root in himself but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he falls away. 22 “And the one on whom seed was sown among the thorns, this is the man who hears the word, and the worry of the world and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 23 “And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the man who hears the word and understands it; who indeed bears fruit and brings forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty.”

Main Point:

There are many who want to claim Jesus, but only those who produce fruit show themselves as true followers.

Church Vision Statement

We are a biblically rooted church that wants to help you overcome life’s emptiness through a deeper relationship with Christ and connection to a family who cares.

Transformation Questions:

  • Let’s take a second and explain each of the four soils.
    • What kind of people are in the first soil?
    • Do you have any friends or family members who you would consider to be in the first soil? In conversations about Jesus with them, what has your experience been?
    • What kind of people does Jesus say are the rocky soil?
    • Do you have any friends or family members who you would consider to be in the rocky soil? What was their “conversion experience” like? What was the thing that caused them to walk away?
    • How did Jesus explain the third, thorny soil?
    • How do you know if someone is in the good soil?
    • If someone claims to be a Christian, but they do not bear the fruit of Christ in their life do you think it is fair to consider them Christians or at least question their faith?
  • We do not know what the soil is in the hearts of the people around us. Our job is to just be faithful sowers. If you had to grade yourself like on a report card, how would you grade your faithfulness in sowing the gospel in the lives of the people around you? (A, B, C, D, F) Why would you give yourself that grade?
  • What is one name that always comes to mind when you think about someone that needs to hear the gospel in your life?
  • What is the first objection that comes to mind when you think about needing to share the gospel with them?
  • Pray together:
    • Make a list of the names in your group that need to hear the gospel and those who brought names up.
    • Pray that their hearts would be good soil to hear the gospel message.
    • Specifically, pray for the members of your group to overcome the objection they listed as to why they have not shared yet.
