James 4:7-10

7 Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom.10 Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.

Transformation Questions:

  • How would you describe the idea of repentance? Give an example.
    • A common explanation is to turn from sins. See if you can get them to go deeper and talk about what repentance is and is not.
  • How would you explain false repentance?
  • Have you ever asked for forgiveness and told God that you repented from your sins, but you really did not repent? How do you know if your repentance is real?
    • I think you can know if repentance is real if you no longer continue in that sin.
  • When you think of someone being in opposition to God what comes to mind?
  • Can Christians oppose God? How so?
    • Absolutely. Anytime we are sinning or doing something that is not advocating God’s glory we are opposing God. This could be something as simple as watching a tv show that is sinful.
  • If two countries were at war and the losing country admits defeat, surrenders, and submits to the stronger country, what would you expect that submission to look like?
  • As Christians, what should submission look like?
  • In James 4:8, it says “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” What does it mean to draw near to God?
    • Drawing near to God looks like practicing spiritual disciplines: worshiping in song, sitting under the preaching of the word, reading the Bible, praying, and fellowshipping with other believers.
  • As a believer when you are going through a spiritually dry season, do you find it hard to draw near to God? What things do you say to yourself that might keep you from drawing near to God?
  • Why is it important that we own and confess our sin? Do you find it hard to own your sins? Do you feel yourself wanting to blame circumstances or others when you have sinned or do you think you are quick to take ownership of your wrongdoing?
